Vested Interest - Kim E. Presbrey, ITLA President 2001-2002
May 2002 Issue
We are in a political year of monumental importance. We have spent the
last twelve months attempting to prepare this organization for the next
twelve months. We have increased membership. We have worked hard on raising
PAC money. [View Full Issue]

The primary results are in, and I believe we have the best slate of statewide
candidates we have had since the 70’s. There are some important
voting figures to be considered. There were about 1.25 million votes cast
in the Democratic primary and about 900,000 votes cast in the Republican
primary, based upon the governor’s races. [View

Several years ago I rented a car while vacationing on a Caribbean island.
When I rented the car I was asked the usual questions about insurance
from the rental agency and remembered I had recently upgraded my card
to a level where I was told my insurance would cover all rental cars.
I also remembered this was true both in the United States and in the Caribbean.

Unlike the majority of our country’s population, I have never been
much of a sitcom watcher. My after work activities have always gravitated
more to either participating in sports or watching them. However, several
years ago I became a victim of the “Seinfeld” craze and soon
found myself either glued to my television or programming my VCR at 8
o’clock on Thursday nights so that I did not miss the next episode.

It has been four months since the September 11th disaster. The opinions
of this disaster in this country seem to be varied depending on the perspective
of the individual opining. Many people are far more disposed to racial
profiling with the only visible criteria being the color of one’s
skin or the manner in which a person is dressed. [View

December 2001 Issue
The holiday season is upon us, and the political races are beginning to
take shape. With the exception of the Governor’s race, it appears
that there are no more than two serious participants in any statewide
primary. As an organization, we are beginning to formulate some opinions
as to who we believe will be the best supporters of victims’ rights
in our State. [View Full Issue]

September 11, 2001, will be a date we will all remember like our parents
and grandparents remember December 7, 1941. As I am writing this column,
the United States has begun bombing Afghanistan, and the war has been
escalated to another level with our soldier’s lives now being placed
at risk as the United States retaliates for the lives lost at the World
Trade Center. There have been many victims of this tragedy already: the
unfortunate workers in the World Trade Center and Pentagon and their spouses
and children, the displaced workers as a result of the economic fallout,
the victims of hate crimes, and the liberties of every American as we
attempt to increase the security of our day-to-day lives. [View

After a career in the Supreme Court, as the Mayor of Chicago, and many
other years as a politician in Chicago, I wonder if Michael Bilandic ever
thought the most historic event in his political career might be the drawing
of his name from a stove-pipe hat. This historic event allowed the Democrats
to draw the legislative maps for the State of Illinois for the first time
in 20 years, unless the Republicans convince the Courts this is not a
proper method of drawing a map, despite the fact that they followed this
same procedure ten years ago. [View

September 2001 Issue
Fall is a time for political decision-making in our State. Most candidates
have been spending the summer gauging political relationships and counting
noses to determine whether they should run for political office in the
primaries next year. This year the choices are more difficult because
candidates must not only gauge their support, but they must determine
what they believe will be the political boundaries of the district in
which they run. [View Full

We all need to concern ourselves with any statute or administrative rule
that limits the access of our client's to their right to due process and
fair compensation for their injury. [View

This is the first column that I will write for Vested Interest
as the President of this organization. Traditionally, this column has
been used to inform the membership of recent developments concerning our
organization and to express the opinions of the President. Because I will
be expressing some of my opinions in this column, I believe it is only
fair that those of you who do not know me personally have an understanding
of the perspective from which I express these opinions. [View
