Following the initiative of ITLA President Gregory L. Shevlin, plaintiff’s attorneys across the state are mobilizing and training to help offer free legal services to natural disaster victims.
Following a disaster, the people affected are vulnerable. They’re susceptible to the influence of fraudulent contractors, scam artists, and others seeking to profit from their misfortune. Our volunteer attorneys will help provide immediate, short-term assistance by answering questions, offering advice in dealing with insurance companies, contractors, government agencies and others with whom victims may have contact in the aftermath of a disaster.
Our volunteers also will assist in identifying and contacting resources to aid victims in their recovery and providing referral information for those with longer term legal needs. We will be there following a disaster to help deter those who might be looking to take advantage of the disaster victims. We can help give these victims an equal voice in dealing and negotiating with legitimate entities, such as contractors, insurance companies and government agencies.
